Scoble was diligent enough to post a reply here when I commented on his blog before. link

What particularly amazed me at the time was the effort he was going through to have meaningless internet battles (remember the picture of the Special Olympics) arguing over semantics or even worse, getting pissed off by 'anonymous posting'. Well, chalk that up to the bad time that was happening, but then again, you have his wish fulfillment fantasy of April 1 (link) and you realize that in a way, Scoble is a good blogger, because he is invariably honest. You can tell he was going to leave Microsoft for the past few months during his existential crisis.

I am just hoping he shys away from MonkeyBoy territory.

Or to put it mildly, The Capitol Steps Suck. Apparently they seem to be relatively well-liked out there in Culture Land, particularly with the NPR set. However, their appearances on NPR are one of its low points in programming. They're not that funny and exhibit 8th-grade level parody that doesn't even achive the level of satire.

Back to junior high swing choir with the lot of them. Now, about that time in band camp...

Whither LiveType?

Apple released the Universal Binary version of Final Cut Studio today, upping the version number to 5.1.

Of interest to a few, it appears as though LiveType did not survive the translation to Intel. Can't find any statement regarding whether or not it is permanently decommissioned, but I'll update the post if anything surfaces anytime soon.

Have never been a heavy user of LiveType, but I do appreciate its results, and it's quite fun to play with.

Update: As near as I can figure out, LiveType has been moved to be an element of Final Cut Express HD and jettisoned from Final Cut Studio. So, I think there still is hope for its continued existence when FC Express is updated.

Robert X. Cringely's launch of his internet-only, PBS-affiliated geek interview show has been somewhat overshadowed by the tragedy that has been what happened to New Orleans. (Sorry for the difficult diction, I gave up half-way through a sentence that would have somehow thrown blame at the government, but then we know about that already don't we).

Alright, I find this article just too much.

The upshot? Clearchannel and Viacom systematically ruin broadcast radio over the past 20 years, then when new technologies - Satellite Radio, internet streaming, and iPods come along to give people a friggin' option, listeners jump ship in droves for something that doesn't suck so much. So devaluing their assets by billions of dollars wouldn't be necessary if they a) weren't so behind the times technologically and b) had any idea of how to program a radio station (hint: letting local DJs determine content seems to work).

Movies this bad only come around once in a generation...

So for the pitiable few (amongst whom I must count myself) that have not yet seen Alone in the Dark, we must be aware that it has shattered metacritical records and come in at Rotten Tomatoes at a sobering 1% positive.

I began to wonder at the 1% figure. Turns out that Michelle Alexandria over at Eclipse magazine gave it a favorable review, in essence, saying if you didn't expect very much you wouldn't be disappointed. I won't have to remind you that we are talking about Uwe Boll here, though. Michelle's review tally also includes false positives for Alien Vs. Predator, Blade Trinity, Catwoman, Van Helsing, The Punisher, and Matrix Revolutions. Although, she does take credit for naming "Matrix Reloaded" "Matrix Retarded", if indeed that's something to be proud of. My friend Roger says that retarded people are special, and that they have the strength of two or three gorillas so you shouldn't mess with them.

Obviously, Ms. Alexandria doesn't have a vagina, and is in fact an approaching-middle-aged male comic book store clerk.

But Ms. Alexandria does have the distinction of hating Kill Bill. Guess I'm not inviting he/"she" over to the hot tub anytime soon for fruity Pebbles and crusty vaseline. By the way, I'm not alone in noticing the disturbing case of Ms. Alexandria.

Back on Sunday, March 7, 2004 we went to see Neil Young and Crazy Horse do their "Greendale" tour at the Mark of the Quad Cities. I see that he has just released a "Greendale 2nd Edition" with a DVD. The DVD apparently isn't the Greendale movie he just released, but something about the recording of the album and making of the movie called "Inside Greendale". Monday, February 23, 2004 Richard Thomspon played at the Hotel Fort Des Moines. During the soundcheck we got to hear him play "Read About Love" which he unfortunately didn't do later during the show. The guy who opened up for him was a Canadian named Jason Collett who works with Arts and Crafts Records. He had a very funny prom story and we had a drink with him in the bar by chance afterwards.

Pernice Brothers were good last night, but essentially the same show they played last time they were at Gabe's, although with the introduction of a very well performed New Order song. Joe Pernice seems to go between channeling Elvis Costello, Morissey and New Order, kind of a melange of British 80's pop that influenced him formatively - odd with his alt-country rep. The Bigger Lovers were quite good and did an excellent cover of The Only Ones' "You've Got to Pay". Dan Potthast was kind of funny (and trite) in his brief, middle-of-the-room set. Rick Johnson Rock-n-Roll machine was more like standup for his weird performance, although props for his faux theremin playing.

So I was trying to remember the name of the band who opened for Yo La Tengo when they played at Grinnell last year (September 26, 2003) at the Harris Center. Finally remembered, it was the Aislers Set. Yo La Tengo were awesome, the Aislers Set were good but not great but I am still interested in looking up some of their recordings.
